How to Install the Pentair 522621 IntelliChem Controller with Acid Tank

The Pentair 522621 IntelliChem package includes the IntelliChem water chemistry controller and an acid tank with a tank-mounted chemical feed pump. This system is designed to help monitor and manage pool water chemistry by reading pH and ORP levels and dispensing chemicals when needed.

This guide gives a general installation overview for pool professionals, service technicians, and experienced installers. Always follow the official Pentair installation manual and local electrical/plumbing codes.

What Is Included with Pentair 522621?

The Pentair 522621 package is commonly used for residential pool automation and chemical control. It includes:

  • IntelliChem water chemistry controller
  • Acid tank
  • Tank-mounted chemical feed pump
  • Flow cell assembly
  • pH and ORP probe connections
  • Chemical feed tubing and related installation components, depending on kit configuration

The IntelliChem can be used with compatible Pentair automation systems and may also be paired with salt chlorine generators or other chemical feed systems.

Before You Start

Before installation, make sure the pool equipment pad is safe to work on.

Turn off power to the pool equipment at the breaker, relieve filter pressure, and close any necessary valves before cutting or drilling into plumbing. Chemical automation systems should only be installed by a qualified pool professional or licensed electrician where required.

You will also want to manually test and balance the pool water before enabling automatic chemical feed. A good starting range is:

Water Parameter Recommended Range
pH 7.2–7.6
Free Chlorine 1.0–3.0 ppm

Step 1: Mount the IntelliChem Controller

Choose a solid vertical surface near the pool equipment pad. The controller should be mounted in a protected location where it can be accessed for service and programming.

General placement tips:

  • Mount the controller at least 10 feet from the pool or spa wall
  • Leave enough clearance to open the front cover
  • Avoid areas exposed to excessive chemical fumes
  • Avoid locations with extreme heat
  • Keep the unit close enough to the flow cell so the probe cables can reach

The controller should be installed in a clean, dry, and serviceable location.

Step 2: Mount the Flow Cell

The flow cell holds the pH and ORP probes and allows a small sample of pool water to pass across the sensors.

Install the flow cell vertically and close to the IntelliChem controller. Do not overtighten the fittings. The pH and ORP probe cables should be able to reach the controller board without stretching or modifying the wires.

Important: the flow cell is for water sampling only. Do not inject acid or chlorine directly into the flow cell.

Step 3: Install the pH and ORP Probes

The IntelliChem uses two probes:

  • pH probe — monitors pool water pH
  • ORP probe — monitors oxidation-reduction potential, commonly used to help control sanitizer levels

Remove the protective caps only when you are ready to install the probes. The probes should remain wet and should be handled carefully. Hand-tighten the probes into the flow cell and do not cut or alter the probe wires.

Save the protective caps for storage or winterization.

Step 4: Plumb the Flow Cell Sample Lines

The flow cell uses a small inlet and outlet line to move pool water through the sensor chamber.

A common plumbing layout is:

Connection Typical Location
Flow cell inlet After the filter and before the heater
Flow cell outlet After the heater, farther downstream on the return line
Acid injection point On the return line, separate from the flow cell

The sample water should come from clean, filtered water. The outlet should return the sample water back into the return plumbing.

Do not install the chemical injection point into the flow cell. Chemical injection should be placed separately on the return line.

Step 5: Install the Acid Tank and Feed Line

Place the acid tank in a secure and ventilated area on the equipment pad. The tank should sit level and should not be easily knocked over.

Run the chemical feed tubing from the tank-mounted pump to the acid injection fitting on the return plumbing. Make sure the tubing is secure, protected, and free of kinks.

The acid feed pump should only operate when the pool circulation pump is running and there is proper water flow.

Step 6: Wire Power to the IntelliChem

The IntelliChem controller may be wired for 120 VAC or 220–240 VAC, depending on the installation.

The controller should be powered from the load side of the pool pump relay, not from constant power. This helps ensure that chemicals are only dispensed when the circulation pump is running.

Typical transformer wiring is:

Voltage Wiring
120 VAC Brown/Black tied together to one line; Blue/White tied together to the other line
220–240 VAC White to one line; Brown to the other line; Black/Blue tied together

Electrical wiring should be completed by a qualified electrician or pool professional. Always disconnect power at the breaker before opening the controller or working on electrical connections.

Step 7: Connect the Flow Switch and Probes

Inside the IntelliChem controller, connect the flow switch and probe wires to the proper terminals.

Typical board connections:

Component Board Connection
Flow switch red wire FLOW
Flow switch black wire GND
ORP green wire ORP-
ORP clear wire ORP+
pH green wire pH-
pH clear wire pH+

The flow switch helps prevent chemical feeding when there is not enough water movement through the flow cell.

Step 8: Connect to Pool Automation, If Used

If the IntelliChem is being connected to a Pentair automation system, use the RS-485 communication connection.

Typical RS-485 wiring:

Wire Color Connection
Yellow +DATA
Green -DATA
Black GND
Red Not connected

The IntelliChem may be used with compatible Pentair automation systems such as EasyTouch, IntelliTouch, SunTouch, and IntelliCenter, depending on the specific equipment setup.

Step 9: Start Up and Program the IntelliChem

Once the plumbing and wiring are complete, check all fittings, tubing, and electrical connections before restoring power.

Before enabling automatic chemical feed:

  1. Turn the circulation system on
  2. Check for leaks
  3. Confirm water is flowing through the flow cell
  4. Manually test pool water chemistry
  5. Balance the pool water
  6. Confirm pH and ORP readings are stable
  7. Run the IntelliChem setup/configuration process
  8. Set the desired pH and ORP setpoints
  9. Set feed limits, mix times, and safety alarms

Do not leave the system unattended until proper operation has been confirmed.

Important Installation Warnings

When installing the Pentair 522621 IntelliChem system, keep these safety points in mind:

  • Do not inject acid into the flow cell
  • Do not run the chemical feed pump unless the pool pump is running
  • Do not operate the chemical feed pump without proper water flow
  • Do not mix acid and chlorine in the same tank or tubing
  • Do not cut or modify probe wires
  • Do not install the system where unauthorized users or children can access it
  • Do not handle electrical wiring unless qualified
  • Always follow chemical handling safety instructions
