Pentair IntelliChlor IC20, IC40 & IC60 Troubleshooting Guide

Pentair IntelliChlor IC20, IC40 & IC60 Troubleshooting Guide

Jul 15, 2026Tigran Akopyan

Most IntelliChlor problems are caused by one of five issues:

  • Low water flow
  • Incorrect salt level
  • Dirty salt cell
  • Cold water
  • Power or communication problems

The good news is that many of these issues can be diagnosed in just a few minutes.

This troubleshooting guide explains what each IntelliChlor light means, the most common causes, and how to safely restore chlorine production.

IntelliChlor Models Covered

This guide applies to:

  • Pentair IntelliChlor IC20 (520554)
  • Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 (520555)
  • Pentair IntelliChlor IC60 (521105)

All three models use the same operating principles, status lights, and basic troubleshooting procedures.

Quick Troubleshooting Chart

Problem Most Likely Cause
No lights No power to the cell
Flow light is red Low water flow
Cell light flashing green Cell needs cleaning
Cell light red Water too cold
Low Salt light Salt below operating range
Very Low Salt Salt critically low
Good Salt flashing Salt level too high
No chlorine production Output set too low, cold water, low salt, dirty cell

No Lights on the IntelliChlor

What it means

The cell is not receiving power.

Remember that the IntelliChlor is only energized when the circulation pump is running. If the pump is off, the cell will normally appear off as well.

Check these first

  • Pump running
  • Breaker ON
  • Power Center has power
  • Fuse not blown
  • Cell cable connected
  • Automation system enabled

If everything above checks out and the cell still has no lights, inspect the power center and cell cable before assuming the cell has failed.

Flow Light Is Red

What it means

The cell is not detecting enough water flow to safely produce chlorine.

No chlorine will be generated until adequate flow is restored.

Common causes

  • Dirty filter
  • Pump lost prime
  • Pump running too slowly
  • Closed valve
  • Dirty skimmer basket
  • Dirty pump basket
  • Blocked cell
  • Failed flow switch

Check

  • Pump basket
  • Filter pressure
  • Valve positions
  • Pump RPM
  • Water level
  • Cell for debris

Cell Light Flashing Green

What it means

The IntelliChlor has detected calcium buildup on the cell plates and recommends cleaning.

Solution

  1. Turn off power.
  2. Remove the cell.
  3. Inspect for scale.
  4. Clean only if scale is present.
  5. Reinstall and restore power.

Avoid unnecessary acid cleaning because it can shorten cell life. Pentair recommends cleaning only when inspection shows scale buildup.

Cell Light Is Red

What it means

The water is too cold for chlorine production.

IntelliChlor automatically stops generating chlorine when water temperature drops below its operating threshold to protect the cell.

No repair is necessary. Chlorine production resumes automatically as the water warms.

Low Salt Light

What it means

The salt level has dropped below the recommended operating range.

Common causes

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Water replacement
  • Pool leak
  • Salt not fully dissolved

Check

Use an independent salt test before adding more salt.

Recommended operating range:

3,000–3,600 ppm

Ideal:

Approximately 3,400 ppm

Very Low Salt

What it means

Salt has fallen low enough that chlorine production is significantly reduced or stopped.

Before adding salt

  • Test salt with a reliable test kit.
  • Compare results with the IntelliChlor reading.
  • Verify water temperature, since cold water can affect readings.

Good Salt Light Flashing

What it means

Salt concentration is above the recommended range.

High salt can increase the risk of corrosion to some pool equipment. The usual correction is to partially drain the pool and refill with fresh water until salinity returns to the recommended range.

No Chlorine Production

If the cell appears normal but chlorine remains low:

Check:

  • Output percentage
  • Pump run time
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer)
  • Cell cleanliness
  • Salt level
  • Water temperature
  • Flow light

Many "bad cell" diagnoses are actually caused by insufficient pump run time or incorrect chlorine-output settings.

Cell Life Indicator

IntelliChlor tracks estimated operating life internally.

Typical service life:

Approximately 10,000 operating hours, though actual lifespan depends on water chemistry, maintenance, and runtime.

If the cell has reached the end of its life, replacement is usually more economical than repair.

Water Flow Problems

The IntelliChlor depends entirely on proper circulation.

If your pump is running at a very low RPM, the flow switch may never close.

Check:

  • Pump speed
  • Dirty filter
  • Closed valves
  • Air leaks
  • Clogged baskets

Increasing pump speed often restores chlorine production immediately.

How Often Should You Clean an IntelliChlor?

Only when necessary.

Do not acid wash the cell on a regular schedule.

Instead:

  • Visually inspect every three months.
  • Clean only if calcium buildup is visible.
  • Use the proper acid-to-water ratio recommended by Pentair.

Over-cleaning shortens cell life.

When Should You Replace the Cell?

Replacement is usually appropriate when:

  • Cell life has been exhausted
  • Chlorine production remains low after confirming proper salt, flow, and water chemistry
  • Cell fails diagnostics
  • Internal plates are deteriorated
