Filter Media Requirements

The SD60 requires approximately 200 pounds of No. 20-grade silica filter sand.

Use only filter media approved for swimming-pool sand filters. Do not use play sand, construction sand or other unapproved media. Incorrect sand size or quantity may restrict water flow, reduce filtration performance or allow sand to enter the swimming pool.

Approved alternative filter media may be used only when the media manufacturer’s conversion instructions are followed.

Installation Requirements

Install the filter on a solid, level equipment pad with adequate clearance for plumbing, valve operation and future servicing. The circulation pump must be sized so that system flow does not exceed the filter’s rated capacity.

A properly routed waste line is required for backwashing and draining. The waste plumbing must accommodate the full backwash flow without excessive restriction.

Always shut off the pump and relieve all internal pressure before servicing the filter, opening the valve clamp or removing any circulation-system component. Pentair instructs users to verify that the pressure gauge reads zero before disassembly.
