Product Overview

The Pentair GulfStream HE150-RA Pool Heat Pump, distributor part number PUR-15-0112, is a high-capacity electric heater designed for large residential pools and spas. Rated at 142,000 BTU under its original published specifications, this heat-only model transfers warmth from the surrounding outdoor air into the pool water, providing an energy-efficient alternative to traditional gas heating.

The HE150-RA operates on 208/230V single-phase electrical service and uses a corrosion-resistant titanium heat exchanger for dependable performance in properly maintained chlorine and saltwater pools. Its scroll compressor, large evaporator coil, and low-RPM fan are designed to provide efficient heating while keeping operating sound at a comfortable level.

This unit is intended for customers who want to extend the swimming season or maintain a comfortable pool temperature without using natural gas or propane. Heat pumps perform best when maintaining a selected temperature over time rather than providing the rapid temperature increase associated with a gas heater.

Important: Current Pentair literature lists the latest HE150-RA configuration at 138,000 BTU under 80/80/80 testing conditions. The PUR-15-0112 distributor listing and earlier GulfStream literature identify this model as 142,000 BTU. Confirm the equipment data plate and current production specifications before ordering.

Benefits

The GulfStream HE150-RA uses electricity to transfer existing heat from the outdoor air instead of creating heat through combustion. In suitable weather conditions, this can provide lower operating costs than gas heating, especially when the pool is covered and the system is used to maintain a consistent temperature.

The titanium heat exchanger offers strong resistance to corrosion and chemical exposure. This makes the unit suitable for saltwater pools when the water chemistry remains within the manufacturer’s recommended ranges.

The built-in digital controller allows the desired pool or spa temperature to be selected directly at the unit. Compatible automation systems may also control the heat pump for more convenient equipment management.

Specifications

Current Pentair specifications identify the HE150-RA with a 138,000 BTU rating, 6.0 COP, 37-amp minimum circuit requirement, 50-amp maximum breaker, and a 30–70 GPM operating flow range.

Installation Information

Install the heat pump outdoors on a solid, level equipment pad with adequate clearance around the evaporator coil and above the fan discharge. Restricted airflow can reduce heating capacity and cause operating faults.

The heat pump should normally be installed after the pool filter and before the salt chlorine generator or chemical feeder. The unit uses 2-inch union connections and a full-flow titanium heat exchanger.

A licensed electrician must provide the properly sized dedicated circuit, breaker, disconnect, grounding, and bonding. The circulation system must maintain water flow within the approved range.

Confirm Before Ordering

Verify that:

• You require the HE150-RA heat-only model.
• Your electrical service supports 208/230V single-phase operation.
• A 50-amp maximum breaker configuration is appropriate.
• Your circulation system can provide 30–70 GPM.
• Your equipment pad has adequate airflow and service clearance.
• You understand the difference between the original 142K listing and the current 138K Pentair test rating.
• Your climate and desired heating performance are suitable for a heat pump.

Warranty Information

Pentair currently advertises GulfStream heat pumps with up to seven years of parts coverage and two years of labor coverage, subject to the written warranty, registration, model eligibility, and installation requirements. Warranty coverage does not include incorrect electrical service, restricted airflow, insufficient water flow, freeze damage, chemical abuse, unauthorized repairs, or improper installation.

Customer Q&A

Is this a heating and cooling model?
No. The HE150-RA is a heat-only pool heat pump.

Why is it listed as both 142,000 and 138,000 BTU?
Earlier distributor and GulfStream specifications identify the HE150-RA as 142,000 BTU. Current Pentair literature rates the latest model at 138,000 BTU under 80°F air, 80% humidity, and 80°F water testing conditions.

Can it be used with saltwater pools?
Yes. The titanium heat exchanger is suitable for properly maintained saltwater systems.

Does this require gas service?
No. The heat pump operates entirely from electricity and transfers heat from the outdoor air.
