Pool Turnover & Flow Rate Calculator
Turn pool gallons and a chosen turnover time into a circulation-flow estimate. This calculator also works in the other direction: enter measured GPM to see the time needed to process an equivalent pool volume and the number of equivalent volumes circulated during your daily runtime.
Find the flow needed for your chosen turnover time, or see how many equivalent pool volumes your measured flow processes during a run.
How to use this calculator
The comparison table shows how a shorter or longer turnover goal changes required flow. This is useful when discussing circulation with an installer, reviewing a pump schedule, or comparing estimated operating flow from the TDH and pump-curve calculator.
- Enter US gallons and a turnover time appropriate for your application.
- Enter measured GPM, or an estimate based on your pump and system head.
- Set daily runtime to review circulated volume and equivalent turnover counts.
Worked example
A 24,000-gallon pool with an 8-hour turnover goal requires 50 GPM: 24,000 ÷ (8 × 60). Running at a steady 50 GPM for 8 hours processes 24,000 gallons, or one equivalent pool volume. That does not mean every individual gallon passed through the filter exactly once.
Example inputs illustrate the calculation. Enter your own measurements, product directions and rates to plan your pool.
Turn your result into a plan
Use the flow result with the filter sizing and pipe velocity tools. All components must accommodate the planned flow, and heaters, cleaners and sanitizers may have additional operating needs. A turnover figure on its own is not proof of safe or effective pool operation.

Is an 8-hour turnover required for every pool?
No. Eight hours is an editable example. Choose the requirement appropriate for the pool type, equipment, water quality and applicable rules rather than treating the default as a universal standard.
What does an equivalent turnover mean?
It is a circulated volume equal to the pool’s capacity. Pool water mixes continuously, so some water may pass through the system repeatedly while other water has not yet circulated.
Can I use the pump’s advertised maximum GPM?
Use flow at the actual operating point. The system’s head, pump speed and plumbing can make operating flow substantially different from a maximum figure.
Does turnover replace sanitizer or water testing?
No. Circulation is only one part of pool care. Sanitizer control, filtration, water balance and appropriate testing still need their own attention.
