Pool Pump Operating Cost Calculator
Estimate what your pool pump schedule costs to run. Enter measured watts, daily operating hours and your electricity rate to calculate daily energy use, a selected billing-period cost and an annual estimate. Compare your schedule with another measured watt-and-runtime combination.
Build a daily pump schedule with up to three measured power levels, then compare monthly electricity cost with your current schedule.
How to use this calculator
Three operating periods let you model a variable-speed schedule that uses different power levels during the day. The calculator uses actual watts instead of assuming that horsepower or an RPM setting always represents the same electricity consumption.
- Read watts at each operating setting from the pump display or a suitable meter.
- Enter hours for up to three periods, keeping their combined time within 24 hours.
- Add your electricity rate, billing days and a comparison schedule.
Worked example
A pump running at 1,000 watts for 8 hours and 250 watts for 4 hours uses 9 kWh per day. At $0.20 per kWh, that is $1.80 daily or $54 over 30 days. A comparison schedule of 2,000 watts for 8 hours costs $96 over the same period, a $42 difference.
Example inputs illustrate the calculation. Enter your own measurements, product directions and rates to plan your pool.
Turn your result into a plan
Use the comparison to evaluate operating schedules, then check circulation and equipment flow requirements before changing runtime. For a pump purchase, combine this cost estimate with the TDH tool and confirm the electrical supply, controls and installation needs.

Can I estimate watts from pump horsepower?
Horsepower alone is not an electrical-consumption measurement. Pump load, efficiency, speed and the hydraulic system affect watts. Use measured power at the settings you plan to run.
Does lower RPM always mean the displayed savings?
The tool does not predict watts from RPM. Enter measured watts for each setting so the comparison reflects your system rather than a generic speed-based assumption.
Does this account for time-of-use electricity rates?
This version applies one energy rate to the whole schedule. If your rate changes by time of day, evaluate the periods separately using their applicable rates and combine their costs.
Are fixed utility charges included?
No. The estimate covers entered energy usage multiplied by your energy rate. Annual cost assumes the same daily schedule and rate for 365 days.
