Installation Information
The salt cell should be installed after the pool filter and heater in the return plumbing. Install the cell at least 3 feet from the heater outlet and provide approximately 12 to 18 inches of straight pipe before the cell inlet for best flow sensing.
The cell can be installed horizontally or vertically. For best performance, vertical installation is recommended with water flowing upward through the cell. When installed horizontally, the control panel must face upward.
The Plus30 requires a minimum flow rate of 25 GPM. Systems operating above 80 GPM should use a properly configured bypass loop to support reliable flow sensing.
The salt chlorine generator and pool pump must be wired so that the cell can only receive power while the circulation pump is operating. Incorrect installation may allow chlorine gas to accumulate inside the plumbing.
Installation and service should be completed by a qualified pool professional according to Pentair instructions and all applicable plumbing and electrical codes.
Recommended Water Conditions
For proper operation:
- Maintain salinity near 3,600 ppm
- Maintain free chlorine according to the pool professional’s recommendation
- Balance pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer
- Maintain sufficient circulation and filtration
- Confirm salt readings with an independent, reliable test method
- Do not operate the cell without water flowing through it
Chlorine production may be reduced when salinity falls below approximately 3,000 ppm. The cell stops producing chlorine at very low salt levels and when the water temperature drops below approximately 52°F.
High salt levels above approximately 4,500 ppm may damage pool surfaces, plumbing, and other equipment.
Operation
Adjustable Chlorine Output
Use the output controls to adjust the percentage of time the cell produces chlorine while the circulation pump is running. Available output should be adjusted according to water temperature, pool usage, weather, sunlight, and measured free-chlorine levels.
Boost Mode
Boost mode increases chlorine production to 100% for the next 24 operating hours. It can be used after heavy swimming activity, significant rainfall, or other temporary increases in chlorine demand.
Boost mode does not replace proper water testing or corrective water treatment when chlorine levels are severely low.
Automation Control
When connected to a compatible Pentair automation system, the chlorine-output percentage may be controlled through the automation interface. Some controls on the cell are disabled while output is being managed remotely.
Maintenance
Inspect the cell blades for calcium scale or debris at least every two months and more frequently in pools with hard water or recurring scale conditions.
Begin with a clean-water rinse. Do not use a pressure washer, screwdriver, brush, or other mechanical tool on the blades because these may damage the protective coating.
Acid cleaning should only be performed when excessive scale remains after rinsing. Unnecessary or frequent acid cleaning can shorten cell life.
When acid cleaning is required:
- Disconnect power to the pump, automation system, and salt cell
- Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection
- Work in a well-ventilated area
- Always add acid to water
- Never add water to acid
- Never use undiluted acid
- Never submerge the complete cell in acid
- Do not leave acid inside the cell for more than 30 minutes
- Rinse the cell and cleaning stand thoroughly after service
Follow the Pentair maintenance guide for the correct dilution ratio and complete cleaning procedure.
Winterization
Freezing water can severely damage the salt cell. In freezing climates, either maintain continuous circulation according to the pool professional’s winter-protection plan or remove the cell after draining the plumbing.
Pentair spacer cell 523102 can be installed in place of compatible LT15, LT25, and Plus30 cells during winterization.
