Product Overview

The Waterway Power Defender 165 Variable Speed Pool Pump | PD-165 is a high-efficiency 1.65 Total HP in-ground pool pump designed to provide reliable circulation, quieter operation, and improved energy savings compared with traditional single-speed pumps.

The PD-165 features dual-voltage 115V/230V operation with automatic voltage selection, allowing the pump to maintain its full 1.65 HP output at either supported voltage. Its variable-speed motor can be programmed to operate at lower speeds for everyday filtration and higher speeds when additional circulation is required.

Designed for easy replacement applications, the Power Defender 165 aligns with both Hayward Super Pump and Pentair IntelliFlo plumbing configurations and includes two self-aligning pump unions plus an IntelliFlo-compatible base.

Key Features

1.65 Total HP Variable-Speed Performance

Provides adjustable pump speeds from approximately 600–3450 RPM, allowing circulation to be matched to filtration, heating, cleaning, and other pool-system requirements.

Dual Voltage 115V / 230V

Automatically detects the incoming supported voltage when powered and operates at full rated horsepower on either 115V or 230V.

Energy-Efficient Operation

Variable-speed technology allows the pump to operate at lower speeds during normal filtration, helping reduce electrical consumption and operating costs.

DOE & CEC Compliant

The Power Defender 165 meets current U.S. Department of Energy and California Energy Commission efficiency requirements.

Built-In Freeze Protection

Automatic freeze protection helps operate the pump during low-temperature conditions to reduce the risk of freeze-related plumbing damage.

Easy Retrofit Design

Designed to align with common Super Pump and IntelliFlo plumbing, making the PD-165 an excellent replacement option for many existing installations.

Premium Shaft Seal

Features a silicon carbide Viton shaft seal for improved wear and chemical resistance.

Installation Information

The PD-165 is designed to simplify replacement of many existing in-ground pool pumps. Its plumbing configuration lines up with both Hayward Super Pump and Pentair IntelliFlo installations, helping reduce plumbing modifications in many retrofit applications.

Electrical installation should be performed by a qualified pool professional or electrician and must comply with applicable local and national electrical codes.

Confirm Before Ordering

Verify the following before purchase:

• 1.65 Total HP
• Variable-speed pump required
• 115V or 230V electrical supply
• Existing plumbing configuration
• Available equipment-pad space
• Required union size and orientation

Important: Some distributor listings describe PD-165 as a 230V pump; however, Waterway's current manufacturer documentation confirms that PD-165 is dual voltage 115V/230V and automatically selects the supplied voltage without a reduction in horsepower.

Warranty Information

Waterway's latest manufacturer literature lists the PD-165 with a 3-year limited warranty, subject to Waterway's current warranty terms, proper installation, application, and operating conditions.

Customer Q&A

Q: Is the Waterway PD-165 a variable-speed pump?
Yes. The Power Defender 165 is a fully variable-speed in-ground pool pump.

Q: Is the PD-165 115V or 230V?
It supports both 115V and 230V and automatically detects the supplied voltage.

Q: Does it lose horsepower when connected to 115V?
No. Waterway specifically states that the PD-165 maintains its rated 1.65 Total HP at either supported voltage.

Q: What is the speed range?
The Power Defender 165 operates at approximately 600–3450 RPM.

Q: Does it have freeze protection?
Yes. Automatic freeze protection is built into the pump.

Q: Is the PD-165 California compliant?
Yes. Waterway lists the pump as both DOE and CEC compliant, making it suitable for applications subject to current California pool-pump efficiency requirements.

Q: Will it replace a Hayward Super Pump?
Waterway specifically designed the PD-165 plumbing configuration to line up with Super Pump plumbing, making it a strong retrofit option. Existing plumbing and equipment-pad dimensions should still be verified.

Q: Will it line up with a Pentair IntelliFlo?
Yes. Waterway states that it lines up with IntelliFlo plumbing and includes an IntelliFlo-compatible base.

Q: Are pump unions included?
Yes. Two self-aligning pump unions are included.
