Product Overview

Restore dependable circulation in a compatible inground pool or spa pump with the Century B985 replacement motor. This two-speed motor delivers 2 horsepower on high speed and approximately ⅓ horsepower on low speed, allowing compatible systems to use full output when higher flow is needed and reduced output during lighter circulation demands.

The B985 operates exclusively on 230V, single-phase, 60 Hz electrical service. High speed runs at approximately 3450 RPM, while low speed operates at approximately 1725 RPM. The motor uses a Y56Y square-flange configuration commonly found on compatible inground pool pumps.

A threaded stainless-steel shaft connects the motor to the pump impeller. Its open drip-proof enclosure provides ventilation around the windings, while automatic thermal-overload protection helps protect the motor if its internal temperature becomes excessive.

This listing includes the replacement motor only. The pump housing, impeller, diffuser, shaft seal, two-speed switch, timer, wiring, and installation hardware are not included.

Specifications

Compatibility

The B985 is intended for compatible pumps requiring a two-speed, 230V, Y56Y square-flange motor with approximately 2.2 total horsepower.

Horsepower alone does not confirm compatibility. Compare the existing motor’s voltage, speed, frame, flange, service factor, total horsepower, shaft, amperage, and rotation. The pump impeller and diffuser must also be matched to the motor’s total output.

Replacing a single-speed motor with the B985 requires compatible two-speed controls. A standard single-pole timer or switch will not provide independent high- and low-speed selection.

Installation Information

Installation should be completed by a qualified pool technician or electrician. Disconnect and lock out power before servicing the pump.

Wire the motor according to its nameplate diagram using controls rated for two-speed 230V operation. Replace the mechanical shaft seal whenever the motor is separated from the pump wet end. Inspect the impeller, diffuser, seal plate, O-rings, and housing before reassembly.

Prime the pump completely before startup. Never operate the pump dry.
