High Head vs. Medium Head

IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTICE

Pentair uses different impellers for high-head and medium-head C-Series pumps, even when the motor horsepower is the same.

For 10 HP applications:

073830
10 HP High Head
CH-100 / CHK-100 / CHKL-100

070226
10 HP Medium Head
CM-100 / CMK-100 / CMKL-100

These parts should not be selected solely by horsepower.

Before ordering, verify the complete pump model number and hydraulic configuration.

Heavy-Duty Brass Construction

Commercial circulation pumps may operate for extended periods and under demanding flow conditions.

The 073830 uses cast brass/bronze construction, providing:

• High structural strength
• Excellent resistance to mechanical wear
• Long service life
• Stable hydraulic performance
• Suitability for commercial pump applications

This construction is substantially heavier and more durable than the thermoplastic impellers commonly found in smaller residential pool pumps.

Closed-Face 8-Vane Design

The impeller uses a closed-face design with eight internal vanes.

As the pump motor rotates the impeller, water enters near the center and is accelerated outward through the vane passages.

This action converts motor energy into:

• Water velocity
• Flow
• Discharge pressure

The high-head vane geometry is specifically designed for installations requiring greater system pressure.

Typical Applications

Pentair C-Series pumps are commonly found in:

• Commercial swimming pools
• Hotels and resorts
• Municipal pools
• Schools and universities
• Recreation centers
• Competition pools
• Large spas
• Water features
• Aquatic facilities
• High-flow filtration systems

The 073830 provides the factory hydraulic configuration for compatible 10 HP high-head C-Series pumps.

Installation Guidance

Replacing a commercial pump impeller requires proper pump disassembly and inspection.

During replacement, technicians should also inspect:

• Mechanical shaft seal
• Impeller key
• Impeller lock screw
• Impeller washer
• Washer gasket
• Pump shaft
• Volute
• Pump seals and O-rings

Pentair lists separate associated components including the 071037 impeller lock screw, 071048 impeller washer, and 071046 impeller key within the C-Series assembly.

Professional installation is recommended.
