Product Overview

The Pentair 272409Z Diverter Seal is a genuine replacement sealing component designed for compatible Pentair HiFlow™ 2-inch side-mounted backwash valves.

Installed beneath the valve diverter, this seal helps maintain proper separation between the internal valve flow paths during filtration and backwash operation. A worn, torn, loose, or deteriorated diverter seal can cause water to bypass internally or leak toward the waste line.

Pentair lists this diverter seal for HiFlow 2" valve models 261049, 261050, and 261142.

What Does the Diverter Seal Do?

Inside the multi-position valve, the diverter directs water through the appropriate passages depending on the selected operating mode.

The 272409Z seal sits beneath the diverter and helps isolate those passages from one another.

When the seal becomes damaged, water may travel through a passage that should be closed, potentially resulting in:

• Water flowing from the waste line during normal filtration
• Internal valve bypass
• Reduced filtration performance
• Difficulty maintaining proper valve operation
• Leakage between valve positions

Warranty & Compatibility

Compatibility

Designed for compatible Pentair:

• 261049 – HiFlow 2" Valve
• 261050 – HiFlow 2" Valve
• 261142 – HiFlow 2" Valve

These three valve assemblies are specifically identified by Pentair in the replacement-parts diagram containing the 272409 diverter seal.

When Should It Be Replaced?

Consider replacing the diverter seal if you notice:

• Water continually coming from the backwash/waste line
• Torn or separated seal sections
• Flattened sealing surfaces
• Brittle or deteriorated rubber
• Seal lifting from the valve bottom
• Internal leakage after rebuilding the valve
• Valve has been disassembled for major service

Important Installation Information

Pentair specifically instructs that when replacing diverter gasket/seal 272409, it should be secured to the valve bottom using an instant cyanoacrylate adhesive suitable for bonding rubber to plastic.

Before service:

1. Turn the circulation pump off.
2. Relieve all filter pressure.
3. Remove the valve top assembly.
4. Remove the existing diverter and old seal.
5. Completely clean the seal mounting surface.
6. Position the new 272409Z seal correctly.
7. Secure it using the appropriate adhesive specified by Pentair.
8. Allow the adhesive to cure as directed.
9. Reassemble the valve.
10. Restore circulation and inspect operation.

Never move or disassemble a multiport/backwash valve while the filtration system is pressurized.

Customer-Facing Q&A

Q: What does Pentair 272409Z fit?
A: It fits compatible Pentair 2" HiFlow valve models 261049, 261050, and 261142.

Q: Is 272409Z the spider gasket?
A: It performs the same basic sealing function commonly associated with a multiport valve spider gasket. Pentair identifies this component specifically as the “Seal – Diverter.”

Q: Is 272409 the same as 272409Z?
A: Pentair's current replacement-parts documentation shows the component as 272409, while distributor inventory may list the service replacement as 272409Z.

Q: Does the diverter come with it?
A: No. The diverter is a separate component, 272413Z.

Q: Is the complete valve top included?
A: No. The complete valve-top assembly is 272422.

Q: Do I need adhesive to install this seal?
A: Yes. Pentair's service manual instructs that replacement seal 272409 be secured using a suitable instant cyanoacrylate adhesive for rubber-to-plastic bonding.

Q: What could cause water to leak out of the waste line while filtering?
A: A worn or damaged diverter seal is one possible cause because it may allow water to bypass between internal valve passages.
